Rob Stewart's Legacy

Without Rob Stewart, there would be no Shark Angels. He was our catalyst, our inspiration, and to use his words, our best “ally in the battle of the century."

Like so many others around the world, Rob inspired us with his boundless passion for the planet – and for every living creature. He made you believe anything was possible – and with Rob, it was.

“Rob was the singular biggest influence on my life. He was one of the most amazing people I’ve ever had the opportunity to meet. Because of him, I changed my life; I’ve done things I never thought possible, traveled to all corners of the globe, met my best friends, and dedicated myself to sharks, and our oceans,” says founder Julie Andersen. “Rob believed he could change the world – and when you met him, you knew he could. And you just wanted to be a part of that.”

Thanks to what Rob started, more than 150 million people live in a place where shark fin is an illegal substance.  His movie, Sharkwater, has played a critical role in the movement to save sharks – from the small village in Fiji to Guangzhou, China. Sharkwater was completely re-edited, provided at no cost to the Chinese government, and was seen by millions in China. Thousands of square miles have been protected for shark reserves. Shark fin consumption around the world is down, nearly half in Hong Kong alone. Around the world people are standing up for their sharks.

And for those that knew him, one of the most amazing things about him was his eternal optimism. Even after everything he’d learned firsthand about the state of the planet – even after the natural atrocities he’d witnessed from the mass slaughter of sharks to the massive abusive of national reserves – he still had faith in mankind and our ability to change.  He believed humanity would come together, solve our issues and create a beautiful, sustainable future.

Rob taught all of us that by combining your passion with your talent, every single one of us can do something to make the world a better place.  Shark Angels around the world are doing just that.

Our hearts are filled with sorrow - but his legacy lives on in all of us. And together we will continue to make his dreams for sharks, for the oceans and for this planet, a beautiful reality.
