Sand Tigers and Citizen Science
Age: 12 and above
Length: 30 mins, 15 mins Q&A
Total time: 45 mins
Presented by: Tanya Houppermans, Blue Elements Imaging
Although they may look menacing with their rows of sharp jagged teeth, sand tigers are actually docile sharks that are very tolerant of the thousands of divers who visit them every year in the waters off of North Carolina. But we know so little about these sharks, such as why they tend to hang out around the many shipwrecks off the North Carolina coast, why they aggregate in large groups, where they migrate to, and where they mate and give birth. Spot A Shark USA was developed to enlist the public’s support in answering these questions. By simply taking a photo of a sand tiger, divers can help researchers better understand the health of sand tiger populations off the U.S. Atlantic coast. During this webcast, you will not only learn fascinating facts about sand tigers, but how YOU can become a citizen scientist and directly contribute to our knowledge of these amazing animals!
