Shark in a bottle souvenirs.

The shark pictured is a spiny dogfish (squalus acanthias). A mature spiny dogfish can only survive for a maximum of 6 months in captivity, with an outlier occuring in a European aquarium where one survived for two years of its 20-24 year lifespan in the wild (should be noted that some are recorded living up to 50 years). Female dogfish do not reach sexual maturity until the age of 12 when they are first able to reproduce, and only spawn in the winter season in offshore waters. Females only produce between 2-12 eggs capable of being fertilized per spawning period, and their gestation period lasts 18-24 months. The pups born live average 20-33cm and typically only about 6 pups will make it to live birth in a healthy pregnancy
