Why Are Sharks Important?
Sharks keep food webs in balance, and encourage biodiversity to flourish by feeding on those species that are most numerous, allowing other species a chance to also grow in number.
A variety of shark species are threatened by the demand for fins, overfishing, fisheries bycatch, habitat and prey loss, and human disturbance.
Practices such as shark finning have caused catastrophic harm to the marine ecosystem. Roughly 73 to 100 million sharks are killed each year by finning.
